Founded in 1982, from Professor Fotis Mitsis and 20 founding members, the Hellenic Society of Periodontology makes an invaluable contribution to medical and research field. In 1993 became a full member of the European Federation of Periodontology. In fact, Professor Alki Andronikaki was the first Greek president of the European Federation of Periodontology in 1999, while in 2005 Dr Ioanna Kamma offered Greece another presidency in Federation.

Hellenic Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry main objectives are the improvement of science of dentistry in general and more specifically the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases in order to improve the oral health of the population.

Specific aims are:

• Improvement of Periodontology in Greece.
• Periodontal treatment of high quality for the benefit of the general population.
• Research and education in order to improve oral health in general and the prevention of periodontal diseases, from members of the Hellenic Society of Periodontology, with the aim of improvement of Periodontology.
• Association of Greek dentists with relevant international societies and organizations, such as the European Union, World Health Organization, which are dealing with Periodontology.
• Every relevant aim.

The Hellenic Society of Periodontology seeks fulfillment of its purposes with every legal mean and specifically with:

• Organization of meetings, symposia, seminars, clinical hands-on meetings, and conferences with the participation of Greek and international scientists in subjects related to Periodontology, Dentistry and Medicine.
• Invitation of international scientists in order to present interesting scientific subjects to members and non-members of the Hellenic Society of Periodontology.
• Publication of scientific papers in journals and editorials in newspapers and magazines or interviews in the mass media.
• Publication of the online Journal “Advances in Periodontology”, which will publish scientific papers of members and non-members and the activities of the Hellenic Society of Periodontology & Implant Dentistry.
• Publication of other journals related to Periodontology and Dentistry.
• Organization of research, studies and programs related to Periodontology in co-operation with the Greek state, Greek Universities, Greek scientific societies, Greek labor unions, and collaboration with relevant global organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Union (EU), the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) or other scientific societies.

Initially its headquarters was the department of Periodontology, Dental School, University of Athens. Later on, under the presidency of Professor Anthoula Kipioti-Diamanti, in 1992, the Hellenic Society of Periodontology bought its own private premises which comprise offices, a small auditorium and a library. The headquarters seated in 54-56 Ilidos street, Athens, Greece.
