Harokopio University (Symposium Venue)





Harokopio University, situated in Kallithea, Athens, close to, of high importance, cultural sites of interest such as the Acropolis Museum, Thissio, Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaron), Keramikos and the Benaki Museum, is a public university dedicated to promoting research and learning in a small, well focused set of intellectual areas, including Geography. Along with University of the Aegean are distinguished as the only two Greek universities with a Geography department.

Founded in 1990 as the successor of the Harokopios Higher School of Home Economics, that was established in 1929, the university has ever since expanded to further scientific areas awarding bachelor's, master's, as well as doctoral degrees. Particularly, addresses scientific areas serving society, health education, technology and environment.

The University is named after the national benefactor Panagis Harokopos, who took care of the founding and funding of a school oriented towards the production of scientific potential in Home Economics. Extended to a 20.000m2 urban area, its campus facilities houses four academic departments, the central administration, the library, the IT centre and student advisory services.

Main building complex includes:

  • The main building, which was renovated and restored during 1993-1994. Today it includes classrooms, the main auditorium, laboratories as well as all the administrative departments of the University. The construction of this building was materialised during 1915-1920, while in 1959 a new wing was added
  • In 2000, the University’s infrastructure was completed by the construction of a new modern building, which includes the Library and Information Centre, the ceremony hall, fully equipped laboratories, classrooms and professors’ offices, mainly of the Department of Geography.
  • Additionally, the needs of the University are covered by one more building, located in a short distance from the main premises. It is located on 89 Harokopou Street and houses laboratories, classrooms and professors’ offices.
  • In 2011 a new building was completed in the area of Tavros, for the newly established Department of Informatics and Telematics and the University’s Refractory

In 2022 Harokopio University of Athens achieved special distinctions in the annual world ranking of Universities Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It was ranked first, winning the title of the best University in Greece, among the thirteen (13) Greek Institutions that participated in the annual ranking, ranked 351-400 among the 1662 Universities in total and gathered the high percentage of 96.3%, at in a scientific / research project, ranking 64th in the world.

Respectively, in the annual Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022, by subject: clinical and health (ranking of universities in individual fields), it was ranked 301-400 among the 925 Universities in total and took the second place among the eight Greek universities, which it shared with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA).
