Welcome Letter by Organizing Committee

Dear participants

As Chairman of the Organizing Committee of ISDE 2023 conference and on behalf of all members of the organizing committee it is my great pleasure to welcome you all in Athens, Greece in July, 2023.
ISDE is the annual conference of the International Society for Digital Earth, in which we will try to present and to answer the question: how digital technology can contribute to protect our home, the Earth.
Our highly qualified scientific program, the reputable presenters and the venue altogether form a powerful motivation for members of the relative scientific community to attend the conference. You are all warmly welcome to Athens, the place that dialectical science was developed, to share your ideas, your questions, but above all to share our state of the art knowledge of Digital science.

Yours truly,
Issaak Parcharidis PhD, Professor
Harokopio University / Dep. of Geography

Chair of Organizing Committee of ISDE 2023

Welcome Letter by ISDE President

Dear Colleagues,

As President of the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE), I would like to invite you to attend this symposium the 13th International Symposium on Digital Earth that will run from the 11th to 14th July 2023 in Athens, the historical capital of Europe and the birthplace of democracy, arts, science and philosophy of western civilisation. Home of Plato, Socrates, Pericles, Euripides, Sophocles, Aeschylus.
The concept of Digital Earth (originally presented in 1998) continuously evolves, adapting to the new technologies and to the digital transformation of our society. Not a unique definition of Digital Earth exists (“a digital representation of the Earth –i.e. a stack of data that has multiple dimensions and use”, ”not a single platform but, rather, a system of multiple (possibly seamless) interconnected platforms”, “a framework to develop a shared understanding of the complex relationships between society and the environment”, ”the ultimate vision for a Digital Twin, which couples our planet’s thermodynamic properties with its associated environmental, economic, and other social phenomena”, “the link between the real and the virtual words, with the aim of providing a better understanding of the global versus local dynamics. (Metaverse)”.
What we know is that Digital Earth science and technology has thrived and provided prosperous growth in key areas being at the cutting edge of the development of Earth Science, Information Science, Space Science and Social Science. The digital transformation of our society and the speed of the technological progress (cloud and edge computing, artificial intelligence, internet of things, digital twins, big data analytics, …) need to be fully understood and absorbed in particular to avoid Digital divide.
I believe this symposium will provide those attending with an unprecedented opportunity for sharing, communicating, and networking and I hope this symposium will be able to generate fruitful insights, discoveries, and output for Digital Earth’s future development.
I would like to thank our colleagues from the Department of Geography at Harokopio University of Athens and those who are in organizing and scientific committees for their considerable efforts in realizing this Digital Earth symposium.
I sincerely look forward to hosting you in this historical and beautiful city, and warmly welcoming you to be part of our community in a shared future.

Best Regards

Alessandro Annoni
President, International Society for Digital - Earth
