Gegar Prasetya

Gegar Prasetya was born in Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara Indonesia; a small island where Rinjani Mt is sited in between Agung Mt in Bali Island to the west and Tambora Mt to the east in Sumbawa Island. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree from Department of Geophysics and Meteorology Bandung Institute of Technology Indonesia in 1990, and MSc and PhD from Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences, School of Science and Engineering, Waikato University, Hamilton New Zealand. In 1997 – he carried out a full 3-dimensional physical modelling of Krakatau 1883 generated tsunami that include explosion test, caldera collapse and pyroclastic flow as part of his Master thesis. He continued his research on volcanic tsunamis within Indonesia region as part of his PhD and documented and reproduced by numerical modelling the catastrophic tsunami event both from Volcanic source and Megathrust within the Indonesian Archipelago. He involved in many posts tsunami field survey in Indonesia as part of International Tsunami Survey Team (ITST) since Flores Tsunami 1992, East Java Tsunami 1994, Tonggolobibi Sulawesi 1996, Biak Tsunami 1996, Aceh tsunami 2004, Samoa 2009, Palu 2018 and Anak Krakatau - Sunda Strait 2018. He is now a chairman of The Indonesian Tsunami Scientific Community (IATSI) Tsunami Research Foundation and a member of National Expert on Tsunami Hazards of Republic of Indonesia.
