Lionakis Michail

Dr. Lionakis is a tenured physician-scientist at NIAID/NIH. His laboratory studies the genetic and immune underpinnings of autoimmune inflammation and susceptibility to mucocutaneous and invasive fungal infections in humans and the cellular and molecular basis of antifungal immunity in clinically relevant animal models. The laboratory's goals are to understand the molecular mechanisms of monogenic autoimmune diseases, to enhance our understanding of the pathogenesis of mucosal and invasive fungal disease, to use this knowledge to identify patients at-risk for developing these diseases and improve their outcomes, to improve care for patients with inherited and acquired susceptibility to fungal disease, and to discover novel genetic and acquired predisposing factors for human fungal disease.
