Heraklion, Crete, June 12-17, 2022 Hybrid Format

Proposed Tours

Elounda, Spinalonga Island and Agios Nikolaos City Tour

(Full Day)

The first step of your tour will be to head towards East Crete and visit Elounda, a renowned tourist resort with luxurious hotels. From Elounda’s port, you will take the boat to Spinalonga, a small island located at the northern end of the Gulf of Elounda.

The history of the island is awe-inspiring. It has been a Venetian fortress, a center of salt production, a refuge for rebels, as well as a leper colony. The last part of Spinalonga’s history inspired the author Victoria Hislop to write a fascinating novel titled “The Island”, published in 2005. It won the British Book Award of Newcomer of the Year in 2007. Upon your return to Elounda, you will have some free time for coffee or lunch.

Afterwards, you will visit the town of Agios Nikolaos, where you will have a guided tour. This peaceful urban area of 20000 permanent residents is the capital of the regional unit of Lasithi. The symbol of the city is the picturesque Lake Voulismeni. It is a small lagoon at the center of Agios Nikolaos used as a harbor for fishing boats. A walk around the lake will be a relaxing experience before returning back to the hotel.

Arkadi – Chania – Rethymno

(Full Day)

This tour starts from Heraklion and combines a relaxed scenic drive along the northern coast with visits at an historical monastery as well as the two most picturesque towns on the island. All Greeks regard Arkadi monastery as a bulwark and symbol of freedom.

In 1866 during the battle between Cretans and Ottoman Turks, the monastery was destroyed and only a few of its occupants escaped the massacre. But the brave and stubborn resistance exhibited by the martyrs of Arkadi, including the abbot of the monastery, proved the stimulus for widespread resistance throughout the island that attracted the attention of several foreign countries and finally resulted in the liberation of Crete.

Many consider Chania as the most beautiful city on Crete. You will stroll along the harbor area of the old port, admire its Venetian and Ottoman architecture, with its Naval Museum housed in the Venetian ship-sheds, wander through the narrow back streets, visit the famous Agora and leather market, and enjoy lunch by the blue waters of the Aegean.

Our last stop is Rethymno, a well-known university town. The old Venetian area of the city features a harbor area as well as an impressive fortress; its narrow alleys sponsor a wide variety of unique shops and skilled artists who display their skills on street corners. Our stop here marks the perfect time for a delicious Rethymno ice cream or a refreshing freddo espresso by the old port.
